Cardinals win Miracle game in 3 Overtimes 62-61 over Caddo Mills

If there was such a thing as instant classic for high school football Friday night in Caddo Mills would definitely be one.  The Pottsboro Cardinals trailed by 2 touchdowns in the 2nd half and never really had the lead until the final play, the Cardinals rallied to beat Caddo Mills 62-61 in triple OT.  The heroes were many, the great plays and unbelievable drama unmistakable, somehow, some way Pottsboro withstood everything and won another comeback victory to improve to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in district 6-2A.

Pottsboro was trailing 34-20 with just over 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd period.  Hunter Mullinex connected with Kory Waller on a 26 yard td pass to pull the Cards within 34-27.  Pottsboro successfully executed an onside kick to get the ball back and it was Mullinex to Waller again, this one good for 14 yards and the score was tied 34-34 just before the end of the 3rd.  Caddo Mills senior quarterback Erk Roberts the 3rd of his record 6 rushing touchdowns with 6:56 remaining to put the Foxes back up 48-41.  After the Cardinals failed on a 4th down conversion Pottsboro’s defense came up with it’s only stop of the game, forcing a punt with 4:36 remaining.  The Cardinals offense drove 83 yards and Hunter Mullinex scrambled 13 yards for the game tying score with 1:01 left in regulation.  In OT the Cards scored first only to see Erik Richards run it in from 25 yards on the first play.  Both teams scored in the 2nd OT and Pottsboro had the ball first in overtime number 3.  Pottsboro scored on a 5 yard run by Chris Delacruz to make the score 62-55, Caddo Mills got a 25 yard run by Erik Richards on the first play to make it 62-61.  The Foxes lined up to kick the extra point, then after a timeout elected to go for 2.  Pottsboro interecepted and won the game by the improbable score of 62-61.

Numerous records fell in the contest:

Most points combined 123 old record was 82 set in 1994 when the Cardinals lost to Pilot Point 61-21

Most points scored 62 tied the record from 2004 when the Cards beat Bells 62-12

Longest OT game, and only the 4th OT game in school history.  Old record set in 1997 2OT  vs. Bonham.
