20 Oct Cardinal ride defense to victory! Pottsboro knocked off Commerce 20-6 leads district 6-2A DI at 4-0
It finally felt like football weather! On a cool windy night at Jim Henderson Memorial Stadium the Cardinals used a stingy defense and just enough offense to defeat the Commerce Tigers 20-6 in a district 6-2A DI game and improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in district play. Pottsboro took their first possession 53 yards to jump out on top 7-0 and never trailed the rest of the way. The Cardinals moved the ball through the air on that first drive scoring on a 22 yard pass from Zane Pritchett to Nate Watson. Commerce responded with an 18 play 75 yard drive and scored early in the 2nd quarter on a 14 yard Bran Kelley run but the extra point was no good and the Cardinals led 7-6. As a cold front moved in and the wind picked up passing became more and more difficult, the Cardinals found themselves going against the wind in the 2nd & 3rd quarters. This made it difficult to move the ball, fortunately Pottsboro took advantage of a short punt and a penalty by the Tigers and cashed in on a 20 yard heave into the teeth of the wind just before halftime to up their lead to 13-6 at intermission. Hunter Mullinex threw it as far as he could and Kory Waller made a great catch and dove into the end zone with :02 left in the half. Pottsboro kept the ball on the ground in the 3rd quarter and only allowed 2 offensive plays by Commerce. Zane Pritchett put the game away with a 5-yard run with 5:50 to play. Pottsboro improves to 7-1 on the season and sits atop district 6-2A DI standings at 4-0. The Cardinals travel to Van Alstyne Friday October 25th for a showdown with the Panthers. V.A. is 4-3 and 2-1 in the district.
