04 Feb 2014-2016 UIL Realignment A New District and a new Class
The Pottsboro Cardinals are moving to Class 3A and to district 5 in the UIL realignment announced Monday Feb 3, 2014. Don’t fret about moving to 3A, all teams in Texas moved up in classification as the UIL turned 6-man football into class A. So 3A Division I is the same as 2A Divison I. The Cardinals have been in district 6 the last 2 years and will return to district 5 where they competed from 2010-11, winning the district crown in 2011. You might also notice District 5 has only 6 teams, last year in District 6 there were 7 teams which will mean the Cardinals will have an extra non-district game.
Here is the district makeup of 3A-5 D1
you’ll notice 2 other teams have joined Pottsboro from District 6, Farmersville who finished 7-5 and defeated Pilot Point 35-27 in the bi-district round of playoffs last year. The Cardinals defeated the Farmers 24-17 at home last year in one of the toughest games of the year. Van Alstyne finished 2013 7-5 losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs to Malakoff. Who can forget the Cardinals thrilling 23-21 win at Van Alstyne last season. The rest of District 5 consists of holdovers from the old District, Whitesboro was the champ in 2013 going 10-2 losing a heart breaker to New Boston 14-7 in Regional round of playoffs. Pilot Point was 7-4 and
It looks like a really tough district on paper, you have 4 teams that won a bi-district championship last year not to mention 2 district champs in Pottsboro and Whitesboro. It’ll be good to see these old rivals meet again, they haven’t played since a non-district encounter in 2011, which happens to be the last home loss for the Cardinals they’ve won 12 in a row at home. For the record Pottsboro leads the all-time series with Whitesboro 19-11 and have met the Bearcats on the gridiron more than any other team in school history. One note, Pottsboro met Bowie in the bi-district last year winning 30-8, the Bowie Jackrabbits finished 4th in district 5 in 203.
