District 5-3A DI Preview

With an off week for the entire district let’s check the other teams and see what awaits the Cardinals in 2014.  Keep in mind Pottsboro hasn’t lost a district game since 10/29/2010 when Howe defeated Pottsboro 20-13.  To put that in perspective, none of the current Cardinals were in High School when that occurred, the Seniors were in 8th grade.  This year will be the toughest district yet.  New entrant Pilot Point looks to have regained it’s form and is the highest rated team by Maxpreps #7 in 3A-I.  Here are the Maxpreps ratings for teams in the district.

#7   Pilot Point      5-0
#16 Van Alstyne   5-0
#23 Pottsboro      4-1

the rest of the teams are
Farmersville   4-1
Callisburg      3-2
Whitesboro    0-5

Oct 10th @ Farmersville
Cards fans may remember a great come from behind win a year ago 24-17.  The Farmers probably have the best offense in the district led by senior RB Darrin Pennington, he is 2nd in the district with 879 rushing yards and averages 9.1 yards per carry.  Sophomore Chase Hacker has done a good job at QB for the Farmers completing 72% of his passes and is 2nd in the district with 970 passing yards and 12 td’s.

Oct 17th vs. Callisburg
The Wildcats are 3-2 led by Senior RB Jake Parker who has 899 yards rushing to lead the district. Callisburg’s best win is probably a 34-9 home thumping of Tom Bean.  Parker accounts for most of the offense and already has 130 carries.

Oct 24th  @ Van Alstyne
Pottsboro escaped with a thrilling 23-21 win last year, this year may take even more heroics for the Cardinals to get a victory.   Alex Phillips the Panthers 6’1″ 205 lb senior QB is the man VA relies on, and he has delivered in 2014.  Phillips leads district 5 with 1217 passing yards and 14 td’s and has completed 72% of his passes.  Phillips does have help, Dont’e Kehler averages 10.0 per carry for 482 and Kearon Redmon leads the district with 27 catches for 387 yards.

Oct 31st vs. Pilot Point
What are the odds of Pottsboro meeting the Orange clad Bearcats on Halloween night.  This has the potential to be a classic, PP has some of the top offensive players in the district with DaCoven Bailey 13.6 per rush and 18.9 per pass reception and Senior QB Travis Garrett who is extremely efficient completing 75% of his passes for 964 yards and 9 td’s.  The Bearcats D is stout as well only allowing 184 yards per game.

Nov 7 @ Whitesboro
This is an old rivalry for the Cardinals, Pottsboro has faced Whitesboro more than any other team in their history, leading the series 19-11.  Whitesboro’s Jake Dyer leads the Bearcats with 454 yards on the ground and 5 td’s.  Whitesboro has struggled this year after having a tremendous team in 2013 and graduating most of their key players.

In my humble opinion, this is the best 3A district in the state and should make for some great football, can’t wait!!!!
