Cards win district opener, whip Farmersville 38-24

The 2014 Pottsboro Cardinals showed they are serious about continuing their domination in district play as they knocked off the Farmersville Farmers 38-24.  With storms approaching the Cardinals defense was a force of nature in it’s own right.  Pottsboro forced 3 turnovers and kept Farmersville’s outstanding running back senior Darrin Pennington at bay,  to come away with a district win on the road.  Throw in superb special teams that recovered a free ball on a kickoff, forced a fumble on a kickoff return and blocked a punt and the anticipated nail biter never materialized.  Pottsboro scored on a 34 yard TD run by Zane Pritchett with 23 seconds remaining in the first period and never trailed again.  The Cardinals were up 17-10 at half, recovered their own 2nd half kickoff, it was  a high short kick into no-man’s land, which led to a short TD drive.  Pottsboro built the lead to 31-10 before the Farmers added a couple of 4th quarter touchdowns to make it look a little closer.  Zane Pritchett was the standout on offense, he ran for 151 yards and 3 touchdowns and threw for 2 more.  Patton Lyons was all over the Farmers Darrin Pennington, along with the rest of the defense they held Pennington to only 118 yards on 19 carries.  Winning on the road against a formidable foe is not easy and the Cardinals did it with elan.   With the victory Pottsboro extends their incredible streak of 19 consecutive district wins and starts off 1-0 in district 3A D1-5 and 5-1 on the season.  Next Friday it’s a home meeting with the Callisburg Wildcats.  Farmersville falls to 0-1 in district and 4-2 overall.
