You knew is was going to be difficult on the road at Van Alstyne, but this hard, NO WAY!!!!  Pottsboro had to overcome a lot of obstacles to hang on for the 28-21 victory, head coach Matt Poe said his team showed mental toughness.  Okay, that’s what it is, it just seemed like everything was stacked against Pottsboro and that VA was destined to get their first district win of the year.  But the Cardinals weren’t going to allow it, you know that mental toughness thing.  Zane Pritchett got the Cardinals on the board in the first quarter on a nifty 49 run on 4th and 2 down the home sideline and the Cardinals led most of the first half 7-0.  Ohh, but it sure seemed like it should’ve been 21-0 or 24-0.  In the 2nd quarter the Cardinals drove inside the VA 10 and ended up with a 4th & goal at the 2, Senior Thaddeus Flinn gave it everything he had but was stopped 1 foot short of the goal line.  Penalties wiped out a beautiful td pass from Pritchett to Nate Watson and more penalties ended a drive that started at the VA 29 after a 33 yard punt return by Pritchett.  The Panthers started throwing the ball short against the Pottsboro zone defense and VA’s Senior qb Alex Phillips got away from the rush and found Dont’e Kehler for a 48 yard td pass and in a blink the game was tied 7-7 with :47 left in the half.  Pottsboro came out determined in the 2nd half and scored twice in the 3rd, once on a 46 yard td pass from Pritchett to Myles Mitchusson and the other on a 3 yard run by Pritchett.  You knew Van Alstyne wasn’t going to go easy, they marched 96 yards in 11 plays, Phillips found Shawn Wheeler on a 15 yard pass to make it 21-14.  Phillips capped a 12 play drive with a 2 yard dive and it was all even at 21-21 with 4:19 left in regulation. But the Cardinals answered, going 75 yards in 9 plays with Pritchett going the final 14 yards on the ground and with 1:24 left Pottsboro was up 28-21.  That’s where the fun started……after the kickoff VA started at their own 27 with 1:38 left and 3 timeouts.  That’s nothing for a spread team with a quarterback like Alex Phillips.  Turned out the Panthers threw 2 passes in the end zone and snapped the ball with :03 seconds left from the Cardinal 13 yard line with a chance to tie or win the game.  On that final play the Cardinals 3 man rush of Logan Hardin, Payton Anna & Freshman Blake Poe sacked Phillips to end the game, it took all 3 to bring down the burly VA quarterback.  Actually it took all 22 for the Cardinals to come away with the 28-21 road district win.  Pottsboro is now 3-0 in district and 7-1 on the season.  The once promising season for the Panthers looks grim as they dropped to 5-3 and 0-3 in district.  Zane Pritchett was in “Beast Mode” with 218 yards rushing on 26 carries plus 3 td’s, Pritchett also was 11-18 for 182 yards and a td through the air.  Pottsboro’s defense held VA to only 39 yards rushing and registered 6 sacks.  For VA it was all about Alex Phillips he finished 23-38 for 326 yards and 2 td’s and added one on the ground.  This sets up the district championship game next Friday in Pottsboro vs. the vaunted Pilot Point Bearcats, PP defeated Whitesboro 58-28 and is also 3-0 in district and 8-0 on the season, rated #4 in the state by maxpreps.com.  And, ohh yeah Pottsboro continues their streak of 21 consecutive district wins, has to be some kind of record.
