Cards Defense Shuts Down Pilot Point 22-7, Wins 4th Straight District Championship

The game of the century lived up to it’s billing, 2 great teams, great crowd, we even had football weather on Halloween night.  You can call the Pottsboro defense the Dirty Birds or just DANG GOOD, either way they pulled off a miraculous feat holding Pilot Point about 43 point below their average.  The Cards forced 4 turnovers and did exactly what their head coach Matt Poe asked, “just keep everything in front of you and don’t allow big plays.”   Okay, to be fair the Bearcats did have 1 scintillating 73 run by Dacoven Bailey in the first quarter but that was it.  When you add up 4 turnovers(3 fumbles forced and an interception) it was one of the best defensive performances of the year by anyone.  The Cardinals used a grind it out rushing attack the entire game.  Pilot Point was determined to not let Pottsboro get deep on them, they succeeded but they allowed QB Zane Pritchett to slash his way to 260 yards on 27 carries and score 2 td’s.  It was really a defensive ball control game almost like a throw back to the 1970’s or 80’s.  Pottsboro only attempted 1 pass in the 2nd half.  Pottsboro scored first on a 40 yard field goal by Abdul Mal but only led for :20 because Bailey broke lose on a 73 yard mind-blowing run where he stopped on a dime at midfield that caused 2 defenders to miss then raced to final 50 yards to pay dirt.  Pottsboro drove to the Bearcat 6 late in the first half but settled for another Mal field goal, this one from 30 yards out.  7-6 Pilot Point at the half, Poe told his team it was just like last week at Van Alstyne when the game was tied at 7 at intermission and it was.  Pottsboro took the 2nd half kickoff and marched 66 yards in 7 plays as Zane Pritchett raced 22 yards to the pylon for the touchdown.  The extra point clanked off the right upright and it was 12-7 Pottsboro.  PP coughed up the ball again at the Pottsboro 32 and the Cardinals marched down for their 3rd field goal a 38 yarder into a slight north breeze with 10:23 to go in the game it was 15-7.  A bunch of Pottsboro fans remember that score, it was the final in the Regional playoffs back in 1981 when Pilot Point defeated the Cards on their way to their 2nd straight state championship.  At this point it’s still a one score game and the Bearcats moved to the Pottsboro 14 yard line, a sweep by Bailey reached the 1 before he was hit hard and fumbled into the end zone recovered by the Cardinals.  A 60 yard Pritchett run and the upset was complete.  4 straight district championship, 22 straight district wins and one extremely excited fan base.  I believe if you drive by Jim Henderson Memorial Stadium tomorrow at 6 am you just might see the final score still in lights up on the scoreboard.  Pottsboro 22  Pilot Point 7
The Cardinals are now 8-1 and 4-0 in district Pilot Point drops to 8-1 and 3-1.  The Cardinals wrap up the regular season next Friday at Whitesboro
