08 Nov Cardinals Sweep District, Defeat Whitesboro 45-35…..Ready for Playoffs
The Pottsboro Cardinals finished up the regular season with a workmanlike 45-35 victory over Whitesboro, so playoffs, here come the “Dirty Birds”. When you have already clinched the top seed for the playoffs the most important thing is to avoid injuries, mission accomplished. The Cards came through the game, got the victory and avoided any noticeable injuries.
Pottsboro jumped out to a 31-7 lead early in the 3rd quarter and then coasted to a 45-35 win over Whitesboro to finish the season at 9-1 & 5-0 in district play. The Cardinals will now go into 2015 with an incredible 23 game district winning streak. Pottsboro will open of the 3A D1 playoffs @ Bonham vs. Caddo Mills Friday Nov 14 at 7:30 pm. It’s weird to play Bearcats in back-to-back weeks and Whitesboro had everything on the line, a win and they get in the playoffs plus it was Senior night and the last home game for the Bearcat Seniors.
Pottsboro used a tried and true formula, let Zane Pritchett run, and he ran like the wind on the first possession Pritchett got the Cards started with a nifty 44 scamper through the heart of the Bearcat defense. Pottsboro added a 37 yard field goal by Abdul Mal and a 3 yard run by Pritchett and led 17-0 before Whitesboro got on the board with 3:35 to go in the first half. Pottsboro then drove 63 yards and scored on a 4 yard Myles Mitchusson run with only :10 left in the first half.
To start the 2nd half the Cardinals recovered another short kickoff and immediately took advantage on Pritchett’s 3rd TD run, at that point Pottsboro was up 31-7 and put it on cruise control. The only problem, Whitesboro didn’t stop playing, in the 3rd the Bearcats added 3 touchdowns and the Cardinals got a pair. One coming on the play of the game when LB Chris De La Cruz played the option pitch perfectly, batting it down and picking it up on a one hop on his way to a 30 yards fumble return for touchdown. Whitesboro added a couple of 4th quarter TD’s to make the final 45-35. Whitesboro still made the playoffs thanks to Farmersville’s upset at Pilot Point, the Bearcats finished the regular season 2-8.
