Cardinals 2nd Half Knocks Out Whitesboro 37-14

The Pottsboro Cardinals motto is “We Will Win”, on a breezy Friday night at Munson Stadium in the Regional round of the 3AD1 playoffs that’s exactly what the Cardinals did to the surging Whitesboro Bearcats.  Pottsboro withstood the power running game of Whitesboro and shut down the Bearcats in the 2nd half to advance to the Regional finals for the first time since 2008.

Pottsboro scored on their first possession on a nifty bubble screen to Myles Mitchusson who split the defenders and zipped 51 yards with 9:22 to go in the 1st quarter. Whitesboro started to pound the ball behind their Senior laden offensive line, Jake Dyer scored on runs of 25 and 31.  In between Myles Mitchusson thrilled to home side with a whirling, tackle breaking 80 yard kick off return for touch down.  Whitesboro’s last score came with :42 left in the first half but the Cards quickly moved the ball down to the Whitesboro 33 yards line and as time expired Junior kicker Abdul Mal nailed a 50 yard field goal to make the score 24-14 at half.

The Cardinals coaches do a great job of half time adjustments and this game was no exception. Whitesboro got the ball to start the 2nd half and the Cardinals “Dirty Bird” defense forced a 3 and out.  Pottsboro went to work as QB Zane Pritchett threw another bubble screen to Nate Watson. Nate did a great job of tightropping the home sideline for a 66 yard score. One of the biggest plays of the game occurred in the 3rd quarter as Bearcat QB Channing Hickman hit WR Wiley Walsh behind the defense, Cardinals defensive back Isiah Urquizo chased him down at the 4 yard line and forced a fumble that Zane Pritchett scooped up and returned to the 34.

Pottsboro put together it’s best drive of the night going 88 yards in 12 plays, using 6:14 of the 4th quarter clock and scored when Thaddeus Flinn blasted over from the 2.  Patton Lyons was once again one of the many standouts on the Cardinals defense as he finished with 16 tackles and helped limit Whitesboro junior RB Jake Dyer to 43 yards on 9 carries in the 2nd half.  Pottsboro won their 11th straight game matching the record the Cardinals set in 2012 when they started 11-0.  Pottsboro will play Mineola Saturday at 2 pm in Royse City, the Yellowjackets knocked off Pilot Point 34-27 this past Saturday.  With the win Pottsboro improves to 12-1, Whitesboro finishes their outstanding season at 4-9.  Another motto for the Cardinals in 2014 is “Play in December” that’s one goal the team will accomplish this year.
