Ohh So Close, Cards Season Ends in Regional Final to Mineola 14-7

The Pottsboro Cardinals win with great coaching, playing with tremendous heart, and by rarely making mistakes.  It was a great effort in Royse City in the 3A-D1 Regional Finals vs. Mineola Saturday but the Cardinals came up just short and fell to a stout Yellowjacket squad 14-7.   On this Saturday with the stakes so high the Cardinals made one to many mistakes, the last one coming with :03 left at the Mineola 5 yard line.  That’s what I’m talking about, ohh so close.

The Cardinals made it look easy going 69 yards in 13 plays to take a 7-0 lead with 3:10 to go in the first period.  Little did anyone know that would be the last time Pottsboro would score.  It was actually a great defensive game both ways, Pottsboro held Mineola to 25 yards and only 2 first downs in the first half.  But Pottsboro had several opportunities to add to the lead.  In the 2nd quarter the Cardinals had 4th and short, stopped by the Mineola D at the 20 yard line.  The key play in the game might have been when Pottsboro had the ball at the Mineola 1 yard line with :30 left in the first half.  Out of the Wildcard formation the snap went through the hands of senior RB Thaddeus Flinn and was recovered by Aaron Stanford of Mineola so it stayed 7-0 at intermission.

Mineola made a major adjustment to their offense at half time, instead of spreading the defense out they went with tight ends and wingbacks and got more blockers involved in a power running formation, this proved to be crucial for Mineola.  The Yellowjackets finally got their offense cranked up in the 3rd quarter scoring the tying touchdown on a 1 yard sneak by Jeremiah Crawford with :32 remaing.

The Cardinals responded with a drive to the Mineola 1 but once again the Cardinals botched the snap and Pottsboro fell on it at the 9 yard line.  Mineola then put together the drive of the game going 76 yards in 10 plays with Chantz Perkins running in from the 1 with 1:54 to go.  Mineola led for the first time 14-7.

Pottsboro proceeded to drive to the Yellowjacket 9 yard line before an interception by LB Juan Vargas at the 5 with :03 left sealed the win for Mineola.  Pottboro finishes the season at 12-2 a great accomplishment no doubt, Mineola wins their 11th straight and are 11-3 overall.  The Yellowjackets will face Shallowater in the semifinals next week.
