26 Sep Pottsboro wins battle of unbeatens 49-7
Both teams entered the game 4-0 and some thought the Howe Bulldogs could give the Cardinals their first true test of the year. After the contest there was little doubt who the better team was as Pottsboro laid a whoppin’ on the Bulldogs 49-7 .
Pottsboro had a total of 11 offensive plays in the first half and led 35-7, you had to be there to see how that is even possible. Special teams and defense were the name of the game, Howe attempted 2 on-side kicks the Cardinals recovered, both led to short fields and Pottsboro added a punt return for touchdown to open up the insurmountable lead at intermission.
Zane Pritchett accounted for all the offense on the opening possession running 4 times for 42 yards including an 8 yard td run to put the Cardinals up 7-0 only 2:11 into the contest. After a 3 & out by the Cardinals defense, Pritchett hit receiver Nate Watson in stride on a 70 yard strike and before you could blink it was 14-0 Cards.
Pritchett added a td run & a td pass in the 2nd quarter and it was 35-7 Cardinals. Howe does not have a quick strike offense so the Bulldogs were pretty much out of it at halftime. Pottsboro added the only points in the 2nd half on an 8 yard Zane Martinez td run and a 1 yard dive by Michael Hall. Your final Pottsboro 49 Howe 7. Zane Pritchett led the way on offense with 127 yards and 2 td’s on the ground and 6-9 passing for 149 and 2 td’s. Top defensive players were Zane Martinez, Blake Poe & Jacob Urquizo who held the Bulldogs to 177 yards rushing just 220 yards below their season average and only 7 points after the Bulldogs came in at 40 points per game.
The Cardinals finish the non-district portion of their schedule 5-0, having outscored the opposition 235-29. It’s a week off as the entire district gets a break before opening up 3AI-5 play Oct 9 at home vs. the Farmersville “Fightin” Farmers at 7:30 at Jim Henderson Memorial Field. The radio broadcast starts at 7 pm on Mix 96.1 or listen online at mix961.net.
