22 Nov Great Season Comes to an End for Pottsboro in Area Playoffs
They say to win it all you have to be good and lucky, on Friday night luck flew the coop and the Pottsboro Cardinals fell to White Oak 24-9 in and Area Playoff game in Terrell Texas. The Cardinals knew that senior stand out Zane Pritchett wasn’t going to be 100%, what they didn’t know was the sequence of unfortunate events that would occur in Terrell that would bring the season to an untimely close.
On the very first play from scrimmage Pottsboro had speedster Myles Mitchusson take a direct snap and run a sweep, Mitchusson limped off with an ankle injury never to return. On the next possession Nate Watson was forced to make a tackle after an interception and he left the game with a knee injury and was out for the game. With Pritchett at 50% and not really able to cut plus all the speed on the outside eliminated the Pottsboro offense was a shell of itself. White Oak is a good defensive team, they knew the Cardinals were limited and keep both linebackers in the A gaps making it almost impossible for Pottsboro to run inside.
White Oak took a 14-0 lead thanks to a perfectly executed hook-and-lateral play that went for 43 yards, Dax Davis took it that last 39 on the lateral. Later the Roughnecks took over on the Pottsboro 16 after an interception and penalty and scored on a 3rd down pass to running back Connor Hearron from 5 yards out.
Pottsboro was struggling on offense trying to find a way to move the ball, in the 2nd quarter the Cardinals finally put together a 15 play drive and appeared to score a touchdown but a penalty wiped that out and they settled for a field goal. White Oak took advantage of another turnover on a punt the ball hit a Cardinal blocker and was recovered by White Oak, add in another personal foul penalty and the Roughnecks took over at the Pottsboro 16 again. White Oak kicked a field goal on the final play of the half and led 17-3 at intermission.
In the 2nd half the Cardinals finally started moving the ball by running to the outside and Pritchett hit some big passes to Matthew Poe, getting on the board with 2:54 to go in the 3rd to make it 17-9. The Cardinals got the ball back in the 3rd and thought they had tied the game on a 46 yard td run by Patton Lyons but it was called back on a holding call. This was a theme in the game the Cardinals were flagged 13 times for 150 yards and picked up more holding and personal foul penalties than they have in the other 11 games combined. The Pottsboro fans voiced their displeasure of the officiating to no avail.
The Cardinals were flagged for holding on 3 consecutive plays in the 4th quarter and eventually turned the ball over on downs. The defense, which played tremendous all night, finally tired and White Oak put the game away with a 59 yard drive and scored on a 20 yard run by Connor Hearron.
It is my belief that if White Oak and Pottsboro played at full strength 100 times Pottsboro would win 99 of them. In the game Pottsboro held White Oak to only 156 total yards while gaining 333 and that’s with 70% of the offense on the shelf with injuries. But back to needing luck to win it all. Injuries decimated the Pottsboro offense on Friday and the Cardinals just couldn’t overcome all the obstacles thrown their way. Just for the record, Pottsoboro received 13 penalties for 150 yards and White Oak 4 for 50.
Hats off to the Cardinals team, coaches and everyone involved in one of the greatest seasons in school history, this team had a chance to climb the mountain, if only lady luck had been on their side.
