The Tradition Continues…….

You could use that just about any year to describe the prospects for the Pottsboro Cardinals.  Under Coach Matt Poe and his staff the Cardinals have become one of the top teams in the state of Texas in class 3A.  Here are the teams with the best winning % in the last 6 years.

Wall                     73-9    .890
Pottsboro           64-10 .865
Cameron Yoe       76-13  .854

It looks easy but it’s certainly not easy to maintain the level of success Pottsboro has achieved.

5 straight district championships
23 straight district victories
6 straight playoff appearances

It’s going to be hard to top 2015.  The Cardinals broke school records for most points scored (525), fewest allowed per game (7.2).  Except for injuries the Cardinals had a legit chance to win a state championship.  There is no rebuilding in the Pottsboro lexicon, 2016 will be a RELOAD.

Cardinals Win!!

Cardinals Win!!

Gone are some of the all-time greats in Pottsboro history.  Zane Pritchett finished 2nd in career rushing (3,957) & career passing (3,890).  Some all-time great defensive players like Patton Lyons (369 tackles), Questin Stumpff (238 T)  & Zane Martinez (288 T) also graduated.  2016 will see some new players but the results are always the same, “We Will Win” isn’t the team moto for nothin’.

The 2016 Pottsboro Cardinals will be led by several key returners.  Carson Rein was one of the leaders on defense (72 T), Ashton McDaniel & Hunter Flanagan will lead a strong offensive line.  Myles Mithcusson is one of the best receivers in class 3A, in 2 seasons he has 84 receptions for 1,533 yards and 20 td’s.   On defense Blake Poe & Keegan Pritchett will anchor the front.

Here is a preview of the 2016 opponents

Aug 26    Gainesville    Coach Poe has mentioned how difficult it was to schedule games for the upcoming season.  Apparently when you’re leading 49-0 at halftime teams just don’t want to play you anymore.  This has forced Pottsboro to schedule up, Gainesville is a 4A-D1 team which is 2 classifications above the Cardinals.  The Leopards are coming off a 1-9 season and have a new coach, James Polk takes over and is expected to run a version of the Wing-T.  Polk previously was the head coach at Snyder Tx.  Back from last year QB Hunter Tuberville threw for 245 yards and RB Calion Baker rushed for 643 yards and 5 td’s.   Pottsboro hasn’t played Gainesville since 2005 and is 0-10 all-time.DSC_1447

Sept 2         Gunter     This is a great rivalry, 2 similar programs and history of winning.  The Cardinals had the upper hand last year winning in Gunter 42-0.  The Tigers have an experienced team returning and should be tough.  QB Trey Carr, LB Zach Lowe & WR/DB Dylan Jantz are a few of the top returning players.  Gunter is 58-19 in the last 6 years as head coach Jake Fieszel enters his 10th year just like coach Poe.   the series is 7-5 Gunter.

Sept 9          @Bonham     The Purple Warriors have struggled the last few years and have lost 21 in a row.  Coach Tony Johnson is in his 2nd year and will try to get Bonham going in the right direction.  QB Austin Simmerman  & RB Corey Hartwell should be key performers this year.  Bonham leads the series 9-3 but Pottsboro has won the last 2.

Sept 16        North Lamar     Another team from 4A-D1.  The Panthers have a new coach Aaron Emeyabbi.  Last year the Panthers finished 5-5 and compete in 4A1-7.  Top returners include RB Javon Franklin & WR/DB Menderiz Gray.

Sept 23        @Aubrey       Pottsboro has played the Chaparrals the last 4 years and have won all 4.  Last year it was 45-0 in Pottsboro, coach Keith Ivey is in his 2nd year and Aubrey showed improvement as they finished 8-5 and made the playoffs.  Key players this year include FS/WR Gatlin Grisso & RB Pablo Vera.  Pottsboro leads the series 13-3.

Sept 30         open          All district teams have the date open to get ready for district play.

Oct 7             @Howe      Howe moves back into the district after 2 years in 3A-D2.  The Bulldogs finished 10-2 last year with one of those loses to the Cardinals 49-7.  Coach Zach Hudson has the Bulldogs rolling with the Slot-T offense. Some of the top returning players include OT Matt Griffin, LB Tyler Hartsfield & LB Tyler Grisham.   sereis 17-10-1 Pottsboro.

Oct 14           Callisburg      The Wildcats had one of their best seasons ever.  They finished 10-3 and advanced to the 3rd round.  Leading rusher Chase Caldwell is back (rush 1,057 yds)plus QB Parker Huddleston.  series 15-3 Cardinals.2

Oct 21           @Pilot Point   This game will take place at Massey Stadium, site of the crazy 23-21 Pottsboro come-from-behind win last year in the mud.  Gone is Dacoven Bailey, one of the most dangerous offensive players in 3A.  Rob Best will have the Bearcats ready since Pottsboro has beaten the PP 2 straight times.   Top performers this year are expected to be TE Chase Hammer & OL Carlos Giron.  series 12-7-1 Pilot Point.

Oct 28           @Van Alstyne    The Panthers finished 6-5 last year and made the playoffs.  They should be one of the top teams in district 3A1-5.  Levi Jones returns, in 2015 he rushed for 1,411 and 12 td’s plus TE/DE Michael Hensley should be some of the top performers for the Panthers this year.  sereis 16-7 Pottsboro.

Nov 4             Whitesboro    This rivalry game has become a traditional 10th week contest.  Coach Eddie Gill and the Bearcats lost some of their top offensive weapons with the graduation of RB Jake Dyer (rush 1,706 yds) & QB Channing Hickman. Top returners are LB Preston Johnson & OL/DL Triston Robinson.   series record 22-11 Pottsboro.
