Cards Survive in OT

Sometimes you just get the feeling it can’t be this easy, Friday night in Van Alstyne proved that point.  After sailing through road games at Howe and Pilot Point the Cardinals found themselves in a fight at Panther Stadium in Van Alstyne.  Trailing 24-10 at halftime Pottsboro went to trusted Senior Carson Rein at QB and he delivered, boy did he ever.

Carson Rein

Carson Rein

In one of the great games by a Cardinal player Rein rushed the ball 27 times for 214 yards, he threw the 36 yard pass to Myles Mitchusson to tie it and then scored the winning touchdown in overtime.   He also added 14 tackles on defense and played special teams all night, basically never leaving the field.

The way the Cardinals were playing it looked like it would take a miracle to come away with a victory and that’s almost what happened.  Van Alstyne’s Scott Taylor missed a 35 yard field goal on the last play of regulation.  Then in OT the Panthers had a 4th down and completed a pass to Chase Wilson, it appeared he lunged for enough yards to pick up the first down.  After the officials consulted they determined Wilson had fumbled and on 4th down the rule moves the ball back to the spot of fumble, short of the first down stakes.  Miracle, “Do You Believe”

Pottsboro did not play their best game of the year but somehow still found a way to win, the victory clinched the district championship for the 6th straight year, it also kept the district winning streak alive at 32 in a row.  _zkh9380

There were some great individual performances like Carson Rein’s, Keegan Pritchett had a game to remember 16 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and played every snap on the offensive line.  At the end of the day it was another example of Cardinal football, as Coach Poe said after the game, “this team will never quit”.  Sometimes miracles really do happen.

The Cardinals wrap up the regular season hosting Whitesboro Friday at 7:30, pregame on Mix 96.1 at 7.
