13 Nov Cards Pull Out Incredible Win! 42-36
After leading the entire game the Pottsboro Cardinals found themselves trailing Kemp with 39 seconds remaining. Pottsboro had led the entire game, but now they were behind 36-35 for the first time all night. Ball at your own 39, no timeouts left, no room for error. The Cardinals showed what they are made of scoring on a 26 yard pass from Hunter Watson to Matthew Poe with only 13 seconds remaining on the clock……..Crowd goes crazy, the Cardinals proved their motto, “We Will Win” is not just a bunch of words, winning one of the most incredible playoff games you would ever want to witness. Pottsboro 42 Kemp 36…..
But that is hardly the whole story, Pottsboro led 21-0 entering the 4th period. At halftime Kemp head coach Brandon Hankins made an important decision, he decided to move standout wide receiver Elijah Gardiner to QB, that changed the game dramatically. Gardiner had a hand in four 4th quarter touchdowns, 2 passing, 2 rushing and his 2-point conversion pass from a fake place kick gave the Yellowjackets the lead with 49 seconds left……….but only momentarily.
The Cardinals had a lot of heroes on Friday night, Myles Mitchusson returned, not 1, but 2 kick offs for touchdowns covering 88 & 80 yards. Matthew Poe scored the winning touchdown and had 4 catches for 144 and 2 td’s. Ty Bates was named the Texoma Chevy Dealers Star of the Games for 2 interceptions and a 4th down pass he batted down to stop another drive. As Coach Poe always says, “it was a team effort”, and it took about everything the Cardinals had to pull this one out.
57 points were scored in the 4th quarter alone, fortunately the last points belonged to Pottsboro. One of the guys in the press box said after the game it was one of the most entertaining games he’d ever seen. I’m not sure about the excitement level but in the playoffs the only thing that matters is if you win or not. And the Cardinals definitely won an incredible game in Greenville.
Pottsboro will face White Oak, the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last season, Friday night at Wildcat Stadium in Emory, 7:30 kickoff. This time let’s hope the Cardinals can win without all the dramatics.
