28 Nov Cardinals Outscores Farmers, Advance to Region Final
Pottsboro has faced some good, maybe great, offenses in the playoffs. Saturday night in Allen the best offense on the field turned out to be the Cardinals. Pottsboro was led by QB Hunter Watson, RB Carson Rein and WR Myles Mitchusson as the survived 42-26 over Farmersville.
At halftime the defenses needed a break, each team had 4 possesions and scored 3 td’s. Farmersville came into the game primarily moving the ball on the ground, but during this game the Farmers flipped the script and called on senior QB Chase Hacker who was outstanding. Pottsboro got on the board first as Carson Rein capped a 74 yard drive, all on the ground, with a 10 yard run. Hacker then threw td passes to Kobie Sheriff and Caleb Twyford to give the Farmers the lead at 13-7 early in the 2nd quarter.
Pottsboro finally went to the air as Hunter Watson hit Myles Mitchusson on a beauty of a bomb from 49 out to put Pottsboro up 14-13. After the Farmers scored with just :28 left in the half it was Pottsboro 21 Farmersville 20.
Farmersville opened the 2nd half marching 59 yards in 7 plays as Chase Hacker dove over from the 1 that gave the Farmers the lead 26-21. Pottsboro answered, going 71 yards in only 3 plays, Hunter Watson had a 52 yard run and Carson Rein put Pottsboro back on top with a 15 yard gallop, after the 2-point conversion the Cardinals led 29-26.
Up until that point it had been a seesaw battle with both teams trading scores and the lead. From that point on Pottsboro made all the plays on offense and defense and pulled away for the victory. An onside kick, recovered by Pottsboro, 2 punts forced by Pottsboro’s defense and an incredible diving catch by Myles Mitchusson and the Cardinals advanced to the Regional Final for the 2nd time in 3 years.
Pottsboro led 39-26 entering the 4th quarter and after the Farmersville td to start the 2nd half allowed only 23 yards offense to the Farmers. Great game by QB Hunter Watson who ended up with 233 yards rushing, 3 yards short of the Pottsboro all time playoff rushing record set by Charles Baker in 1987 vs. Celina. The 233 yards was the 7th best rushing performance in Pottsboro history. Myles Mitchusson had 4 catches for 141 yards and the catch worthy of ESPN’s top play of the day. Carson Rein had 150 yards rushing and 2 td’s as the Cardinals racked up 381 yards on the ground and 538 total. Ty Bates led the defense with 2 picks, one in the end zone, he now has 5 interceptions in the post season.
Pottsboro will face a familiar foe for the Regional Championship, Mineola. The Yellowjackets dashed the Cardinals hopes in 2014 winning a hotly contested game 14-7. The game is Friday night in Royse City, kickoff at 7:30, you can listen on Mix 96.1 or online at mix961.net.
